Cosmic Interplay: Light and Darkness" Exhibit
Historic Arkansas Museum

Cosmic Interplay: Light and Darkness features the mixed media work of artist Don Shaw and the stainless steel sculpture of artist John Ellis. Shaw’s work is strongly influenced by astronomy as he masterfully uses patinas and a technique of embossing copperplate to create the illusion of outer space. “A true work of art is an infinite resource,” says Shaw. “If you look, it will give forever.” Shaw studied at the Museum School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and has taught and lectured at countless colleges and universities including Harvard, the University of Houston, Southern Arkansas University and Rice University. His work has been exhibited at museums both at home and abroad. Closer to home, Don has been a visiting artist for the South Arkansas Arts Center’s AEGIS Middle School Project in El Dorado. He also has experience working with “at-risk” students and has traveled in Arkansas as a visiting artist and lecturer in Batesville, Conway, El Dorado, Hope, Magnolia, Southside, Texarkana, Pine Bluff, Sheridan, and Watson Chapel public schools K-12 and colleges/universities.

Ellis’s own ingenuity and the guidance of mentors has led him down his artistic path with a chosen medium, stainless steel, that allows the artist to slowly process and express his point of view. This process, which he likens to meditation, combines his thoughts, feelings and skills into a concrete form of self expression. “The main influence in my life and my art is the work of Carl Jung,” says Ellis. “Because of his writing and the writing of his followers I have been able to find ways to look at myself in light and in darkness.” Although his works are modern in appearance and materials, the shapes and symbols he draws on are ancient.

Historic Arkansas Museum is open 9am-5pm, Monday through Saturday and 1-5pm on Sunday. Admission to the galleries and parking are free; tours of historic grounds are $2.50 for adults, $1.00 for children under 18, $1.50 for senior citizens.

"Custom by Design: Contemporary Furniture Handmade in Arkansas" Exhibit
Historic Arkansas Museum, Gallery II

Custom by Design highlights the artistry in handmade, one-of-a-kind studio furniture created in Arkansas. The exhibit includes works by: Tommy Farrell, Mia Hall, Keith Newton, Whitney Patterson, 2009 Arkansas Living Treasure Doug Stowe and Lucas Strack. The furniture pieces on display are rooted in the traditional processes of craft and material with aspects of sculpture, innovation, experimentation and cross-pollination from other disciplines. The common thread in the exhibited works is the notion of function. Each artist has, however, pushed the notion of the traditional every-day furniture by infusing the objects with unique aesthetics, non-traditional materials or concept and narrative.

Historic Arkansas Museum is open 9am-5pm, Monday through Saturday and 1-5pm on Sunday. Admission to the galleries and parking are free; tours of historic grounds are $2.50 for adults, $1.00 for children under 18, $1.50 for senior citizens.
